Appeal

Currently there are 3 restoration appeals/funds involving Blackpool trams. New is the 166 appeal - this was recently set up by the TSO/FTS to help to bring back into service Toastrack 166 at the National Tramway Museum. The joint LTT/FTS fund wants to preserve and restore a couple of trams in Blackpool and the TSO fund (associated with the NTM) is already restoring Railcoach 298. If you can, please help with your financial support.

  • Blackpool Railcoach Fund (TSO)

Have you ever thought about helping to preserve a tram? Here is your chance! The Blackpool Railcoach Fund was set up to restore Brush Railcoach no.298 (later renumbered 635). The car is currently under restoration in the Mode Wheel workshops in Salford. Since purchased by the Tramway Museum Society (which runs the National Tramway Museum in Crich) around £ 50,000 has already been spent on the restoration and another similar amount is still needed to complete the job.

There are two ways in which any of you can help:

    • Work is continuing weekly in Salford with a small band of volunteers. Do you want to help? There are plenty of jobs to be done and you don't need to have any particular skills. Why not come along and give it a try?
    • If you can't visit Salford you might be able to give a little financial support. At present the Blackpool Railcoach Fund, which has been collecting solely in support of this tram, has provided most of the money needed to make the progress so far. Each month several hundred pounds are donated by Fund members giving various sums by standing order. In addition, many others give occasional amounts as they wish and as they can afford. However, the advantages of being a regular subscriber include providing a regular income and if you are a British taxpayer and agree to sign a deed of covenant to pay for not less than four years, tax equivalent to a further one-third of what you have given can be recovered by the Fund (i.e. if you donate £ 10 per month the Fund receives an additional £ 40 per year). The Railcoach Fund is now governed by the Tramcar Sponsorship Organisation, itself a registered charity (No. 518466) working closely with the NTM at Crich, in order for these valuable tax recoveries to be possible. Everyone who subscribes becomes a member of the Fund and receives a copy of the newsletter "The Blackpool Railcoach" from time to time.

If you have any queries or want to sign a deed of covenant, please get in touch with the Fund. Write to: Keith Terry, 18 Lidgett Place, Leeds LS8 1HG (Tel. 01132 663018). You may also send him a printout of the following forms.
